Eryngium Jade Frost a commercial success
Eryngium Jade Frost has reasonably soft foliage and stiff upright flower stalks and flowers. It has a long looking good "plant for sale" period. Starting off in early to mid spring with a beautiful rosette of jade green leaves margined with creamy white and with a rose blush when subject to cool winter temperatures. The flower stalks appear in the early summer and grow to about 80 cms high. The flowers open white and by mid to late summer turn to a deep violet. This is a tried and tested production plant and the best all round variegated Eryngium looking good at retail outlets and garden centres with a long selling period.
Potting compost should be fairly open. Normal to fairly dry watering is required. They will take short periods of dry compost but will suffer if allowed to go on. Compost that remains constantly wet on the top can effect the basal leaves . A slow release low nutrient fertiliser is all that is normally required.
Growth regulators can be used to lower the flow stalk height if required.
It is very important, care must be taken in handling the roots of this plant. Any of the thicker roots (not the fibrous) that are damaged or broken can possibly throw up later, fully green shoots. So make sure your staff are carefull especially at the plug to liner stage. These are not suitable as open ground plants.
If you are growing from stage 3 culturers it is advisable to use cylindrical plugs than the cone shaped plugs as the tap root will tend to go around in circles at the bottom of the plug than the basal hole.
Eryngium Jade Frost can only be propagated by tissue culture and are produced under license by VitroWestland only. Others forms of propagation such as root cuttings leads to the formation of green shoots as will root damage either in open ground production or rough handling when potting.
Eryngium Jade Frost can be purchased in a number of forms according to your requirements. Either as stage 3 cultures from VitroWestland or as plugs, liners, or finished plants from other suppliers.
